The Carroll County Recreation Department recently received the honor of one of its parks being nominated to an exclusive list of sites in North Georgia. The Appalachian Regional Commission along with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the Georgia Department of Economic Development welcomed the 19 sites throughout North Georgia that were nominated and selected to represent Appalachia in the first ever National Geographic Map Guide to Appalachia. McIntosh Reserve Park, a 527-acre facility operated by Carroll County, was nominated and selected along with 18 other sites in Georgia. The ARC covers an area comprised of 13 states and 410 counties throughout the Eastern and Central United States. Over 1,000 nominations were submitted and 356 of those were selected throughout the coverage area. McIntosh Reserve Park was recently invited to and attended a workshop for the selected sites in Georgia, the focus of which was to both congratulate the sites and plan how best to track any positive impacts, including the economic impact to the surrounding area that may result from their selection. The Park was also given permission to link its Internet website to that of National Geographic and the Appalachian Regional Commission in an effort to promote the Map Guide to Appalachia. Those interested in obtaining a copy of the National Geographic Map or information related to the selection of Carroll County's McIntosh Reserve Park and/or the other 18 sites in Georgia may contact the Carroll County Recreation Department at 770.830.5902 or 770.830.5879.
